(Fiberoptic Evaluation of Swallowing)

We now have the diagnostic tools to provide a more thorough assessment of your swallow. It’s called FEES which stands for Fiberoptic Evaluation of Swallowing. This portable instrument allows us to bring invaluable diagnostic measures within the comfort of your home or facility. It requires no anesthesia and is a fairly quick procedure. This is especially good news for patients that have a difficult time leaving their home or facility in which they reside. The scope that we use is a small wire which has a camera on the end. We pass this wire through your nose to the back of the throat where we can visualize the areas within and surrounding the voice box. These areas are an important part of our swallow. We then have you eat and drink while we watch how everything is working when trying to bring these things down to your food pipe.
